Wash day shouldn’t be a chore. With the right sequence, it becomes a ritual of self-care that sets your curls up for success all week long.
Whether you’re a wavy, a curly, or a coily, the “Wash Day” is the most important part of your week. It’s the foundation upon which all your styling is built. If you get the cleansing and conditioning right, your refresh days will be a breeze. If you rush it, you’ll be fighting frizz by day two. Let’s break down the ultimate step-by-step process for a perfect wash day.

Step 1: The Prep & Detangle
Never go into the shower with a bird’s nest. Use a pre-poo oil or just a bit of water and conditioner to gently finger-detangle before you even start washing. This prevents breakage and ensures the shampoo can actually reach your scalp. For coily hair, sectioning is your best friend—work in 4 to 6 sections to keep things manageable.
Step 2: Scalp-Focused Cleansing
Shampoo is for your scalp; conditioner is for your hair. Massage your cleanser into your scalp using your fingertips (never your nails!) to break up oils and product buildup. Let the suds rinse down the length of your hair—this is usually enough to clean the ends without drying them out. If you use a lot of heavy butters or silicones, consider a clarifying shampoo once a month to hit the “reset” button.

Step 3: The Moisture Infusion
Once your hair is coated, use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush to ensure every strand is covered. This is the time for “Squish to Condish”—scrunching water and conditioner into the hair until it feels like seaweed. If it doesn’t feel slippery and “squishy,” add more water, not more product!
“Water is the best moisturizer. Your conditioner’s job is to help the hair hold onto it.”
Step 4: Styling for Your Type
Waves: Apply products to damp (not soaking) hair to keep volume. Use lightweight mousses.
Curls: Apply to soaking wet hair using the “raking” method. Use a medium-hold gel.
Coils: Use the L.C.O (Leave-in, Cream, Oil) method on very wet hair to lock in maximum moisture and definition.
Once you’ve applied your stylers, leave it alone! Touching your hair while it’s drying is the #1 cause of frizz. Whether you air dry or diffuse, wait until it’s 100% dry before you “scrunch out the crunch” to reveal soft, bouncy curls. Happy washing!
