Don’t let your fitness goals get in the way of your hair goals. Learn how to keep your curls fresh through every sweat session.
Working out is great for your body, but the sweat, movement, and constant tying back can be tough on your curls. Sweat contains salt, which can dry out your hair, and tight hair ties can cause breakage. However, with the right pre- and post-workout routine, you can maintain your style without skipping the gym. The key is to minimize friction and manage moisture effectively.

1. The Best Workout Styles
Avoid tight ponytails that pull on your hairline and flatten your curls. Instead, try a loose pineapple (securing your hair high on the head) or French braids. These styles keep the hair off your neck—where most sweat accumulates—without putting excessive tension on your curls. Use a silk or satin scrunchie or a “telephone cord” hair tie to prevent dents and snapping. If you have shorter hair, a loose “half-up” style can also work well.
2. Protect Your Edges
Wear a moisture-wicking headband. This helps absorb sweat before it travels into the lengths of your hair and keeps your “baby hairs” flat and protected. If you have high-porosity hair, try applying a little bit of leave-in conditioner or a light oil to your ends before your workout. This creates a protective barrier against the drying effects of salt in your sweat and prevents the hair from tangling during high-intensity movement.
3. The Post-Workout Refresh
Don’t reach for the shampoo immediately. If your scalp feels sweaty, use a blow dryer on the cool setting to dry the moisture quickly. This prevents the sweat from sitting on the scalp and causing irritation or “frizz.” Once dry, use a refreshing spray or a tiny bit of foam to reactivate your curls. If you workout daily, consider “co-washing” (washing with only conditioner) between full shampoo days to keep your moisture levels balanced without over-stripping your hair.
4. Scalp Care is Key
If you find that your scalp becomes itchy or oily due to frequent workouts, incorporate a scalp massage with a light, antimicrobial oil like tea tree or peppermint once a week. This helps to break up any salt buildup and keeps the hair follicles healthy. Remember, healthy curls start at the scalp, so don’t ignore the skin under your hair!
“Your curls should be as resilient as your workout routine.”
By making these small adjustments, you can hit your personal bests at the gym while keeping your curls looking their best all week long. Fitness and great hair really can go hand in hand!
