How to Refresh Your Curls Between Wash Days

The “Day 2” struggle is real, but you don’t need to start from scratch. A great refresh is about targeted moisture and a little bit of magic.

We’ve all been there: you wake up, and your perfect wash-day curls have turned into a flattened, frizzy mess. Before you reach for the shampoo, stop! Refreshing is an art form that allows you to extend your style for 3, 4, or even 5 days. The goal isn’t to make it look like “Day 1” again, but to embrace the volume and character that comes with lived-in curls.

1. The Power of Steam

Sometimes, your hair doesn’t need more product—it just needs to be reactivated. Taking a hot shower and letting the steam penetrate your curls (without getting them wet) is the gentlest way to refresh. The moisture in the air softens the products already in your hair, allowing the curls to spring back into shape. Simply shake your hair out once you’re out of the bathroom and watch the magic happen.

2. The “Spot Refresh” Method

Don’t wet your whole head! Look for the “problem children”—the curls around your face or the very top layer that took the brunt of the pillow friction. Wet just those specific curls, apply a tiny pea-sized amount of leave-in or gel, and finger-coil them. This saves time and prevents you from over-saturating your hair, which can lead to a weighed-down look by Day 3.

3. DIY Refresh Spray

You don’t need to buy a specialized “refreshing mist.” Mix 90% distilled water with 10% of your favorite conditioner in a continuous spray bottle. This creates a lightweight, milky mist that adds moisture without adding too much weight or buildup. Mist your hair lightly, then gently scrunch upwards to encourage the curl pattern to return.

“Refreshing is about working with what you have, not fighting against it.”

4. Tools of the Trade

A continuous mist spray bottle is a game changer—it provides a fine, even mist that won’t soak your hair. Also, keep a silk scrunchie and some root clips handy. If a refresh just isn’t working, a “half-up, half-down” style or a loose “pineapple” can hide a multitude of sins while still showing off your length and texture.

Remember, the more you touch your hair during a refresh, the more frizz you’ll create. Mist, scrunch, and then hands off! Let it air dry or give it a quick blast with the diffuser on cool. You’ve got this!
